After the recent Kaiir Elam trade, this means the Dallas Cowboys could release $97 million cornerback Trevon Diggs this offseason. According to reports, the team made a few trades this week including Elam after losing Jourdan Lewis to the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency. It looks like they’re adding Elam as depth but if Diggs can’t stay healthy, the team has no other choice but to release him. However, no one is going to trade since he isn’t able to pass a physical at this point in his career as he’s recovering from an injury.
Originally selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the former Alabama product made promising strides as a versatile key defender in the Cowboys secondary, recording 56 tackles, three interceptions, 14 passes defended and one sack. Diggs’ rookie season didn’t pan out to huge numbers since injuries to his knee and shoulder along with a struggling secondary have been huge factors but it wasn’t until the season that he broke out. The All-Pro had his best year in 2021 when he earned a high rank in the NFL Top 100 Players of 2022. Despite that, after signing his new contract, the cornerback suffered a season-ending injury in 2023 which led to another knee injury that had to require surgery the following year.
These are all indicators that an NFL athlete is not the same anymore, so the Cowboys could release him, but these five teams could take a shot at him.

Next Possible Teams
New Orleans Saints
After losing Marshon Lattimore last year to a trade, the Saints need a new cornerback in the worst way possible. Paulson Adebo left for the Giants in free agency so they need some type of man to step up after acquiring safety Justin Reid. Diggs might not be a permanent solution but it gives Kool-Aid McKinstry a boost in the secondary with experience.
Los Angeles Chargers
The Los Angeles Chargers have made moves to find replacements at the cornerback position after signing Donte Jackson and Benjamin St-Juste. Even though the team has money to burn, it seems like they’re still taking the cheap route. This means they could take a chance on Diggs who would probably only be able to sign a one-year deal either way to prove his worth. Diggs probably won’t start but he’s capable of assisting Tarheeb Still who has a bright future.
Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens have restructured Marlon Humphrey’s current contract but it doesn’t mean they won’t release him. This is a possibility as he’s aging unless there’s a team that wants to trade for him. After losing Brandon Stephens, Diggs might not make a difference but he has a higher ceiling to stop most passes in the red zone.
Kansas City Chiefs
This team could be a perfect fit for Diggs as a rotating cornerback. After acquiring Kristian Fulton, the team could use some extra depth since Fulton has an injury history too. Diggs could help Trent McDuffie and Joshua Williams as the three-headed secondary men even if Diggs winds up being a third-stringer. It gives him extra time to recover from his injury if it happens.
Washington Commanders
The Commanders finally brought in a new cornerback Jonathan Jones with the expectation they could lose Marshon Lattimore. However, they could depth this free agency as he’s only on a one-year deal. Diggs has a history with Dan Quinn so it works for both sides.
