After nearly one year without winning a trophy and almost two years without winning a major one, Los Angeles Football Club clinched their first-ever U.S. Open Cup, beating Sporting Kanas City 3-1 at BMO Stadium on extra time.
Olivier Giroud, Omar Campos, and Kei Kamara’s goals were enough to win the U.S. Open Cup.
LAFC is a team known for missing big games, especially in finals, under manager Steven Cherundolo. LAFC has lost four out of five finals.
The Black and Gold missed the Campeon de Campeones to Tigres, Lost against Leon in the CONCACAF Champions League, lost 2-1 to Columbus Crew in the MLS Cup, and recently lost in the Leagues Cup to Columbus Crew.
However, LAFC turned the corner and won against Sporting Kansas City, a team with four U.S. Open Cups, nearly making it five.
LAFC’s win in the U.S. Open Cup is a special moment and a significant boost for the rest of the season. It went downhill after losing the Leagues Cup, losing three games and drawing two.
However, after winning the U.S. Open Cup, LAFC is on the rise, winning three games in a row. LAFC, with two games remaining, versus the Vancouver Whitecaps and the San Jose Earthquakes. The Black and Gold goal is to win both last league games and aim for the MLS Cup.
Now that the Black and Gold have a trophy, the players are confident and have a changed mindset.
Also, the return of Carlos Vela LAFC will now have a major boost ahead of the season.
LAFC plays against the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place this Sunday, October 13th.
