Following a thrilling win against the LA Galaxy 2-1 at Rose Bowl Stadium on the Fourth of July, the Los Angeles Football Club is now gearing up for the U.S. Open Cup, where it will face New Mexico United at BMO Stadium Wednesday night.
LAFC’s original match was scheduled against the Houston Dynamo, but an unexpected twist in the form of a tropical storm led to a postponement. As a result, LAFC had an unplanned weekend rest, which they utilized to prepare for the upcoming game and the opportunity to advance to the semifinals.
The Black and Gold started the 2024 U.S. Open Cup in the round of 32 against Las Vegas Lights, beating them 3-1 away from home. In the round of 16, LAFC faced Loudoun United and won 3-0.
In the next round, LAFC will face New Mexico United, which is in 1st place in the Western Conference in the USL Championship. Although the game favors LAFC to go through to the next round, LAFC can’t underestimate New Mexico United.
New Mexico United must find a way to shut down LAFC’s attack, which scored 49 goals in all competitions. LAFC must be cautious at the back if New Mexico finds counterattacks and if LAFC can stop Gerg Hurst, who leads New Mexico with seven goals this season. New Mexico United will defend until the end when they hunt for the perfect opportunity with a counterattack. Even though LAFC has the best defense in the Western Conference, the center-backs have mistakes in them individually.
Meanwhile, the Black and Gold must bring their strongest 11 and demonstrate to New Mexico United that they are here to win the game. However, LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo could rotate the team by resting some key players like Denis Bouanga, Mateusz Bogusz, Jesus Murillo, and Hugo Lloris. LAFC remains undefeated at home, and this match is a perfect advantage for the Black and Gold.
If LAFC wins the game, it will be their second occasion to reach the U.S. Open Cup Semifinals appearance since 2018.
