After an impressive 3-0 victory against the Seattle Sounders at Seattle, it’s time to shift away from Major League Soccer and focus on the League Cup, which started on July 26th.
On Friday, Los Angeles FC started the League Cup by beating Mexican side Tijuana 3-0 at the BMO Stadium.
A brace from Cristian Olivera and a goal from Denis Bouanga gave LAFC the three points.
The Game
LAFC started the game exceptionally in the opening nine minutes. Bouanga dribbled past three Tijuana players and found Olivera, who scored a tap-in.
After an even contest from both sides, Tijuana defender Nicolás Díaz caused his team the game by passing the back backward and giving the ball to Olivera, who found Bounaga, who volleyed the ball back to the net with his left foot to double the lead.
In the second half, LAFC should have scored more goals, but Tijuana goalkeeper Antonio Rodriguez kept Los Xolos from conceding more than two goals.
Eduard Atuesta’s long ball ultimately found Bouanga alone in the Tijuana goal. Bouanga’s shot hit the post, but the rebound deflected, and Olivera was found for the third.
Can LAFC Win This Competition?
LAFC can win this competition; the Black and Gold can take their chances like they did on Friday. It also has a goalkeeper and a midfielder to win the games home and away.
However, defensively, LAFC needs help with concentration and organization, which is evident this season.
LAFC returns to League Cup action on Tuesday, July 30, when the Black and Gold play their final Group Stage game against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
