LAFC Starts 2024 by Taking Action in the Market

January 9, 2024 by Los Angeles Sports Nation

Los Angeles Football Club begins the year by making signings and departing players as the Black and Gold are preparing ahead of the 2024 MLS season. After a two-week rest period let’s investigate what LAFC has done throughout the holiday period.

LAFC signs Hugo Lloris from Tottenham Hotspur

Los Angeles FC made their first signing as Hugo Lloris is Black and Gold. The French World Cup winner signed a one-year contract with an option for 2025 and 2026. The French international will also occupy an international roster slot upon the receipt of his P1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate.

From Giorgio Chiellini to Garth Bale and now Lloris shows that LAFC wants to sign the best players and bring a winning mentality to the club. Lloris joins after an epic 19-year career at the top level of European Football.

He started his senior career with Nice and played for three years. In 2008 he joined Olympique Lyonnais that’s where he showed his true quality. He was named Goalkeeper Of The Year three times (2008/09, 2009/10, 2011/12).

On August 31 2012, he joined Tottenham Hotspur for 10 million plus 5 in variables.

His career in North London was exceptional, appearing in 447 and kept 151 clean sheets across all competitions. He made 361 appearances in the English league registering 128 shutouts. He was a former teammate with Gareth Bale at Tottenham. He helped Spurs to a Champions League Final and nearly won the Premier League in 2016.

Outgoings

Even though LAFC signed Hugo Lloris LAFC did loads of outgoings. On December 12 Giorgio Chiellini announced his retirement and six players’ contracts were declined.

John McCarthy joined LA Galaxy while goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic. Maxime Crepeau joins Portland Timbers while Carlos Vela and Kellyn Acosta are free agents yet there are no signs if they are leaving or staying. Motagua signed Denil Maldonado and one of LAFC’s best players Diego Palacios joined Corinthians on a free transfer.

Overall that’s 15 percent of the squad leaving and it’s time to do more signings. LAFC needs to find a left-back, two or three center backs sign two more goalkeepers, a midfielder and another top player similar to Hugo Lloris. If LAFC doesn’t make enough buy players they could end up trophyless and finish in a similar position as last year.
