Los Angeles Football Club star Carlos Vela, former MLS Cup champion and League MVP, loses his home in Palisades. Vela’s wife, Saioa Canibano, posted a note on social media Thursday stating the house, located near the Malibu-Palisades border, was lost, but the family was safe.
“Our beautiful house in Malibu burned yesterday (…). “We are still in shock with everything that is happening,” Cañibano posted on Instagram, later reporting that the family was out of danger. “It is very sad and terrifying to see how everything burns. To all the concerned messages you are sending us, we are safe. Sending a lot of love to all those affected and we hope that the fire will soon be put out.”
According to the Wildfire Alliance, the Palisades Fire is the most destructive in Los Angeles history after destroying an estimated 23,713 acres with 31% containment.
Not only did Carlos Vela lose his home, but Angel City FC defender Ali Riley also said on social media that her house had been destroyed in the fires.
“This was our home. How is this real. It can’t be real,” Riley said on X along with a photo of the devastated neighborhood.
Vela and his family first moved to the Los Angeles area ahead of the 2018 debut season for LAFC. He won an MLS Cup trophy, two Supporters Shields, and was the 2019 MLS MVP.
He departed the Black and Gold after the 2023 season before rejoining them in late 2024 for the rest of their season last year.
In November, Los Angeles Football Club rejected an option for Vela’s contract in 2025, but the club and the player remain in discussions over the player’s future.
