LAFC failed to defend their MLS Cup over Columbus Crew

December 19, 2023 by Los Angeles Sports Nation

Los Angeles Football Club failed to defend the MLS CUP as the Columbus Crew won their third MLS Cup and beat the Black and Gold 2-1.

The Crew were on the front foot as they wanted more than LAFC. As for the Black and Gold, they started the game by defending which was a dangerous move by manager Steve Cherundolo.

This season when it matters Cherundolo and co do not start the game brilliantly. There were occasions this season when LAFC played well in the first half then in the second they defended allowing the rivals to attack. An example was the game against Mexican Side Monterrey in the Leagues Cup LAFC were 2-0 up and blew it in the second half losing 3-2.

Not only that, LAFC failed to turn up against Leon in the CONCACAF Champions League final and lost to Tigers in the Campeones Cup. This season was a disappointment as LAFC had a team to win all the trophies and failed to produce on the pitch and the coach is to blame. The only players that stepped up in the final were Jesus Murillo and Giorgio Chiellini.

Going to the Game

The first ten minutes of the game LAFC looked completely lost while the Crew were knocking on the door. Columbus Crew took the lead after Cucho Hernandez converted a penalty kick in the 33rd minute, snapping LAFC’s 400-minute streak without allowing a goal, and Yaw Yeboah scored the eventual game-winning goal.

In the second half, LAFC began to dominate the game although the Crew had chances to make it three. LAFC pulled a goal back in the 74th minute when Bouanga scored his 38th in all competitions, tying the MLS record for goals in a calendar year.

However the Black and Gold failed to find the equalizer in the end. In the last minute, Jesus Murillo’s header wasn’t hard enough to draw the game level.

This defeat snapped LAFC’s seven-game unbeaten streak in the MLS Cup Playoffs. LAFC had not lost in the playoffs since 2020, having not qualified for the postseason in 2021 and winning the MLS Cup last year.
