The LA Galaxy still have a mathematical chance of qualifying for the 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs but it only gets fainter as they fail to capitalize on good performances.
Another pair of dropped points from a winning position against St. Louis City SC didn’t do the Galaxy any favors in their late playoff push.
The LA Galaxy coupled pain off the pitch with pain on it after conceding a late equalizer to St. Louis City SC last Saturday, June 14th.
Gabriel Pec scored twice to bring his goal tally up to three, including a would-be winner in the 87th minute. Unfortunately, Pec’s compatriot João Klauss did one better and scored another stunner in the 95th minute to complete his hat trick and send the Galaxy into the Club World Cup break with a 3-3 draw.
They return to league play on the 25th to face ninth place Colorado Rapids for a true six-pointer. It’ll be the first time the two sides play each other this year, and both will be fighting for the last play-in spot.
Colorado currently own the rights to the coveted ninth place spot with 22 points, 12 more than the Galaxy’s 8. A win in Colorado would be huge for LA, closing the gap to playoffs to nine points.
The gap would be even smaller had the Galaxy managed to secure more points from winning positions earlier in the season.
The LA Galaxy have held leads in six different games this year. Of those six games, they’ve only managed to secure a victory once.
That means they’ve dropped points every other time they’ve been winning.
They let results against LAFC and most recently St. Louis turn into draws. More embarrassingly, they’ve turned wins into losses three different times.
To have been winning at all is an improvement from earlier in the year. Only having six leads at any point in 18 games is poor, but the Galaxy have led for at least a moment in five of the last six games.
Marco Reus has been a massive part of these leads. He leads the team with nine goal contributions in 2025, including 7 in the last six games.
The LA Galaxy have only managed to turn these stellar performances into one win (ironically winning against Real Salt Lake without Reus in the lineup) this year.
It doesn’t take an insider like Reus himself to explain why the Galaxy are struggling, but he was still gracious enough to do so, saying:
The LA Galaxy desperately need to eliminate these mistakes and go on this winning streak as soon as possible. As mentioned in a previous article, “the LA Galaxy would need 34 of the remaining 51 points, or two points per game [to make the playoffs]. Winning all of their 9 home games would give them 27 points, leaving them with eight games on the road to come up with seven more points.”
There are now only 48 points available for the Galaxy to earn the 33 they’ll need. With two more of their remaining seven road games coming up, they’re in desperate need of a result after failing to protect their fleeting 3-2 lead in St.Louis.
The win streak Marco Reus was talking about can’t come soon enough if the Galaxy hope to keep their playoff dreams alive. Otherwise, the reigning MLS Cup Champions’ 2025 season will be over much sooner than anyone anticipated (which may be a good thing for what is already the worst season in team history).
