Devin Cooley Signs for Two-Years With the Calgary Flames
Devin Cooley has actually given the Flames lots of confidence, on their rebuild, and also, their current situation. Last year, Dustin Wolf proved that he was a number one netminder. He finished second in Calder Trophy voting and powered the Flames into ‘close’ to Stanley Cup Playoff contention. However, he is young, and as did happen into this year, his level of play wasn’t always at that all-world level. But then, Cooley was able to come in and give the team some added stability. The idea is that the pairing of Cooley and Wolf has developed together and will lead the team from the crease into the future.
Looking At Cooley’s Background
Before this season, the 28-year-old Cooley had only played six NHL games. That was in 2023-24 as a member of the San Jose Sharks. It has been a long time coming after spending three years at the University of Denver and having to start his professional journey in the ECHL. Fast forward, and in 2024-25, he had a fantastic season with the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers. He posted a .905 save percentage through 46 games. He really did seem ready for the next step. And this year, he has taken it. In 13 games as Wolf’s backup, he is 4-4-2. The impressive parts are his 2.40 goals-against average and his .914 save percentage. On a team trying to find its identity, Cooley has done great.
Early in the season, the Flames only had two wins in the first 13 games of the season. However, over the last stretch, they are 12-5-1. Being able to give Wolf rest and not stress about the team needing to change its play, has been a huge boost to the club. This deal is well deserved and could definitely mean bigger and better things down the road, in Calgary and for Cooley individually.
