Los Angeles Kings prospect Liam Greentree is coming off a tremendous season with the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).
Drafted 6th overall by the Kings in the 2024 NHL Draft, he has run over the competition in his way.
Being promoted to the Ontario Reign of the American Hockey League (AHL) is a big deal, and he looks to make an impact during his rookie season in 2025-26.

Greentree recently signed a three-year, entry-level deal worth $2.925 million on July 19, 2024, and quickly set his sights on the AHL. He blew through everything that stood in his way at the OHL and International level, and there was nothing left to prove at this level. The 6-foot-3 and 216-pound Greentree has dominated play since he arrived in Windsor and is ready for a new challenge.
Playing for the Spitfires in 2025-26, he produced 49 goals and 70 assists for 119 points in 64 games. He also had 59 penalty minutes and was a +55 during his reign as captain. While his play was nothing short of amazing, he was not done. He won a gold medal with the Canada U-18 team at the IIHF Under-18 Championships, registering two goals and two assists for four points in seven games.
His next step is with the Reign as he was assigned to the AHL club for the 2025-26 season. He has earned it and has played like the Kings’ top prospect, dominating every team he has played against.
While this is a big deal for Greentree and the organization, we should let him acclimate to the pro game first.
He does lack foot speed and could use the offseason to improve that skill to step right into the AHL. Players in the AHL are much bigger and faster than he is used to, and the game overall is much different. There is also the side that says he could step right in and dominate the league. That is true, but regardless of the draft position, most prospects take a full year or two to develop and get used to the pro game before they show their full potential.
Greentree is up for the challenge as he is now only a phone call away from the NHL. His size, scoring, and physical side could make him a prominent player in the NHL. However, some players take longer than others, which could be the case for Greentree.
The Reign will also look to turn things around as they lost three games to none in the Pacific Division finals to the Coachella Valley FireBirds.
Greentree will be an asset for the Reign, but how will Ontario bring him along as he develops?
