The Los Angeles Kings have entered this offseason full of hope and options. While they had an exceptional home record and a 105-point season last season, things could improve. With new general manager Ken Holland officially announced, he is expected to make a splash in some way this offseason. The question is, will he tinker with this roster or go all in?
The Kings had a well-balanced roster last season but could use some upgrades. With defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov‘s uncertainty, he is the top priority. Given his play from last season, he is expected to seek a deal with an $8 million dollar average annual value (AAV) or higher. If that is his request, the Kings may see him in another uniform next season.
Let us say he is given a contract that the Kings do not match and there is an open spot on the left side of the defense. With Gavrikov likely being the top defenseman available for free agency, the crop on defense is not spectacular but includes some nice pieces. Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad and Dmitri Orlov of the Carolina Hurricanes could be two players to keep an eye on if there is a spot. Ekblad has playoff experience and a gritty game that could have a positive impact on the Los Angeles blueline. Orlov plays a complete game that could also be beneficial.
At forward, The Kings could go to a few places. With Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner grabbing much of the attention, the Kings may stay away from his contract he might want. Instead, they could also chase Maple Leafs forward John Tavares or another forward in Panthers Sam Bennett. Tavares has been consistent in his play and scoring and maybe a piece the Kings look for come playoff time. Bennett brings a feisty style the Kings lack, he has playoff experience and a nonstop motor.

If a trade for these players does not happen nor do they have luck in signing them in free agency, they have another option at forward. Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies could be the subject of an offer sheet, which could cost the Kings some draft picks. He is a good young player who plays with grit and has a scoring touch. Like many other NHL teams, the Kings should look at Knies to upgrade their roster.
Does Holland look for a new backup goaltender? Kings goaltender Pheonix Copley and David Rittich may be the best play for Los Angeles, but would Holland be on the search to replace them for next season? The goaltending crop in free agency is thinner than usual so there may be a slim chance to grab an upgrade. However, they could explore a trade before the start of next season.
Do not expect the Kings to look completely different next season. They may add a few players but for the most part, the roster stays intact, Holland has been known to make moves to improve the roster so expect some kind of move or moves. With a projected cap space of $21.7 million, he has money to seek out options that will improve this roster. How he spends it will be interesting. Will he go for a big forward or defenseman? Will he trade for a big piece and use that money to fill in depth holes?
