The Los Angeles Kings prospects took part in the 2024 NHL Rookie Face-off over the weekend and finished with a record of 1-1-1. Aside from the first game, the group of youngsters played well and some got the attention of Kings management ahead of the main training camp.
Kings prospects show promise
This rookie face-off was a mini tournament that showcased rookies and draft picks from seven NHL teams. There was no champion, as the purpose of this was to see where the prospects and draft picks stood in their development. Los Angeles was one of those teams and they put out a solid group of prospects who stood in and battled every game.
At forward, 2024 first-round pick Liam Greentree, 2020 seventh-round pick Aatu Jamsen, Francesco Pinelli, and Quinn Olsen were among the goal scorers and players who stood out. The defense as a whole was solid, but not one player stood out. Goaltenders Erik Portillo and 2024 draft pick Carter George both saw time between the pipes and were steady throughout.
Los Angeles started the tournament with a 2-0 loss against the Vegas Golden Knights. The Kings won their first game, 2-1 in overtime, against Pacific Division rival Anaheim Ducks. Los Angeles would lose their final game, 4-3 against the Utah Hockey Club.
While the Kings training camp roster has not been revealed, expect a few of these prospects and draft picks to appear and showcase their skills. The players listed above all had good showings and could make a difference in the main camp. Regardless if they make the main roster or are sent down, this could be a big step in their development. All it would take to grab one of the few spots open would be to outwork the veterans and have a good showing in all three zones.
Some lucky prospects may even take part in the preseason schedule. Their first action could take place in the exhibition game, which takes place against the Utah Hockey Club on September 23. The preseason concludes with the Kings taking on the 2024 Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers on October 5 at the Videotron Center in Quebec City.
