Kings’ Fiala and Dubois Shine at World Championships

May 29, 2024 by Los Angeles Sports Nation

The Los Angeles Kings 2023024 season may be over but two Kings players finished up their season after playing in the 2024 IIHF World Championships.

Switzerland’s Kevin Fiala and Canada’s Pierre-Luc Dubois represented Los Angeles and their countries well during the tournament, with Fiala winning the MVP award.

Kings Fiala, Dubois Showcase Skills in Tournament

The 2024 IIHF World Championships run from Friday, May 10-Saturday, May 26, and were held in Prague and Ostrava. The tournament involves hockey teams from around the world trying to prove who is king in the best-of-the-best competition. The tournament consists of eight teams (Canada, Switzerland, Denmark, Czechia, Germany, Slovakia, and Great Britain) playing seven preliminary games before the tournament starts. In the playoff rounds, it is a single elimination tournament; if you lose, you’re out.

Kings forward Fiala finished the NHL season with 29 goals and 44 assists for 73 points in 82 games. His 73 points put him second on the team behind Adrian Kempe for the team lead in scoring. Fiala did not stop there as his scoring continued in this tournament. He recorded seven goals and six assists for 13 points in eight games and was a +8. The Switzerland team went 5-1-1 in the preliminaries and defeated Germany 3-1 in the quarter-finals and Canada 3-2 in a shootout before losing to Czechia in the gold medal game 2-0.

Dubois received a lot of criticism after the season for his lack of offensive production and work ethic on the ice. However, he turned it around offensively and played a solid tournament.

Canada went 5-0-2 in the preliminaries and beat Slovakia 6-3 in the quarter-final in a solid tournament for the Canadiens. Dubois finished with four goals and five assists for nine points in 10 games. He may have played with a chip on his shoulder after the lack of results in the NHL regular season.

Fiala and Dubois’s season is now complete, and they have some time to rest before training camp begins for Los Angeles.

Fiala and Dubois can take their production and try to use it as motivation for next season.

As for Los Angeles, they are expected to make some moves this off-season and be quite busy.
