The Los Angeles Kings have locked up an underrated backup netminder. Goaltender Anton Forsberg, who was backup to Linus Ullmark with the Ottawa Senators in 2024-25 is heading out to the West Coast. Forsberg signs a two-year deal with a $2.25 million average cap hit.

Anton Forsberg Signs New Deal in Los Angeles
Forsberg had played an important role during his time in the Canadian national capital. When he first arrived in Ottawa, his reliability earned him his previous three-year deal that just expired. In his time in Ottawa, he’s been expected to play backup for Cam Talbot, Joonas Korpisalo, and lastly, Ullmark.
The one noteworthy aspect of the stretch in Ottawa was the impact injuries have played on the team as a whole, but more specific to goal. Even this past playoff season was, at least partly, due to the success of even their third stringer, Leevi Merilainen. Furthermore, the only reason Merilainen was even afforded the opportunity was due to the slightly-older Sen goaltender prospect, Mads Sogaard. When you talk about goaltender carousel, Ottawa sure fits the bill.
What It Means
It seems that Darcy Kuemper will be the likely number one in Southern California. However, Forsberg will get a chance at some game time on a very good team. Los Angeles has been active in free agency, but this is a good move to bolster their goalie ranks.
Forsberg stats are solid for an NHL backup goaltender. He’s not the star, nor has he ever expected to be one. In 2024-25, he posted an 11-12-3 record with impressively three shutouts. Also, that came with a 2.72 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage.
The 32 year old native of Sweden has 190 career NHL games under his belt. In that time, he has 74 wins to his credit, eight shutouts, and a 3.04 GAA.
