The Colorado Avalanche locked up a key defenceman with a two-year contract extension. As Josh Manson signs, he is now going to be with the Avalanche through the 2027-28 season. His new cap hit of $3.95 million will begin in the 2026-27 season.

Avalanche Extend Defenceman Manson
Manson joined the Avalanche at the 2022 trade deadline. He became a core piece of the blueline en route to the Stanley Cup victory. Colorado acquired the right-shot defenceman from the Anaheim Ducks, March 14, 2022. Colorado sent prospect Drew Helleson and a 2023 second-round draft pick, back to Anaheim.
In his early years Manson had shown an underlying offensive ability. In 2017-18, his fourth NHL season, he had career highs with seven goals and 37 points. However, eventually injuries began to hamper his development. He was never able to eclipse the 20 point mark until the 2023-24 season.
Moreover, as Josh Manson signs, it is important to consider he was an integral part of the 2022 Stanley Cup run for Colorado. The blueliner scored the Game 1 overtime winner against the St Louis Blues in the Western Conference semi-finals. While with the Avs, Manson has contributed a total of seven goals and 18 points in the playoffs.
What the Extension Means for Colorado
Manson and Sam Girard have formed a formidable second pair for Colorado. Manson brings the heavy element to the Avalanche blueline, an aspect that is otherwise lacking throughout their defence. General manager Chris McFarland is taking a small gamble with extending Manson. Playing a more physical style does not age well in hockey. Combined with Manson’s health struggles, there is some reason for concern.
With the extension, however, Colorado now has their top-four defencemen locked up throughout the 2026-27 season. Though concerns about health and longevity, Manson is a key piece of the Avalanche blue line.
