The Winnipeg Jets have taken care of an important piece of business during this offseason. News emerged that restricted free agent defenceman Dylan Samberg has signed a new contract extension. Thus, avoiding the sometimes contentious process of salary arbitration with the deal. The agreement is for three years and $17.25 million. This deal has an average cap hit of $5.75 million and runs through the end of the 2027-28 season.

Winnipeg Jets Ink Dylan Samberg to Extension
Samberg has only played for the Jets across his four-year NHL career. The 26-year-old totaled six goals and 14 assists for 20 points in 60 games this season. He averaged an ice time of 21 minutes and eight seconds, which has the most by four-and-a-half minutes from his previous season-high. The Saginaw, Minn. native had a Corsi for of 46.8 and a relative Corsi of -5.6.
Samberg has totaled nine goals and 42 assists for 51 points in 216 career games. Winnipeg originally drafted him in the second round, 43rd overall of the 2017 NHL Draft. He was a standout blueliner at the NCAA level at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
The blueliner has also represented his native United States at the international level. He won a bronze and a silver at the 2018 and 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships, respectively. He also was part of the 2023 Team USA squad at the IIHF Worlds, where the Americans places fouth.
What It Means
Samberg took a big step forward in his game. Jets Head Coach Scott Arniel really leaned on the blueliner this season. His ice time went way up and he was trusted in plenty of key defensive situations. Playing as a top-four d-man for the first time in his career, it is worth the money.
He doesn’t get a lot of goals, but Samberg plays a big hand in the Winnipeg defence. This contract keeps him in the fold and allows him to stay a part of the group.
The Jets did win the President’s Trophy, but are seeking loftier goals. Keeping a defenceman like Samford is important in that mission.
