Philadelphia Flyers Hold Pre-Draft Press Conference Discussing Possible Movement

June 20, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

With the 2025 NHL Entry Draft approaching quickly, the front-office, with the likes of Daniel Briere and Brent Flahr, took some time a couple days ago to address some concerns regarding the Flyers’ near future. Philadelphia holds three first-round and four second-round picks this year, a rare situation with plenty of flexibility. As the Flyers continue their rebuild, the upcoming draft may be vitally important for the club’s future.

Movement From Within and the 2025 NHL Entry Draft for the Flyers

When asked about their centres, Briere spoke internally, noting that their current prospects are all on a path towards the NHL lineup. He mentioned many names in the Flyers organization, including Jett Luchanko, indicating his commitment to their development. He also mentioned that he sees a high chance that they make selections with all of their first seven picks.

Furthermore, Briere and Flahr seemed to place high importance on the upcoming draft in terms of team building, noting that they’re still high on this year’s draft similar to the way they were prior to last season. This inward perspective was solidified when Briere singled that the Flyers won’t spend aggressively this offseason with trades or signings unless it makes sense for them long term. Essentially, the Flyers front office remains high on their development system as a means of acquiring players for the main lineup, staying conservative on external solutions.

Long-Term Focus

Placing heavy emphasis on their prospects for Philadelphia’s future made it clear that their rebuild may take longer than previously speculated. While they may be more open to acquisitions to improve the current lineup, they don’t seem interested in speeding up the timeline for the sake of contention. He spoke of Noah Cates’ recent extension as part of their solution to their talent down the middle, indicating that he may stay for all four years of his contract. Regardless, it’s reasonable to imagine that they’ll still address a few concerns this offseason. At the very least, they’ll likely look for a solution for their goaltending and a talented forward piece.

2025 Pre-Draft Analysis and Possible Philadelphia Flyers Draft Asset Movement

Briere’s communication with the media has often come off as a bit vague and open to interpretation. The Flyers’ front office in general tends not to show many of their cards until deals have already been made. With that in mind, even if it doesn’t seem like they’ll be too active during the draft, they likely have many ongoing conversations that could see the light of day. The Flyers’ name has popped up in the defenceman market for weeks now, recently regarding Alexander Romanov of the New York Islanders. This would align with Briere’s messaging in making smaller additions to gradually improve the current lineup.

Their frontoffice hasn’t ruled out a large splash though. If it enhances a position of need at a reasonable price, he probably won’t turn it away. Jason Robertson continues to be a high profile trade target that fits the current Flyers mould. He’s a young star, left wing at the beginning of his prime, one of the most ideal player profiles for Philadelphia. The Flyers’ front office may be hesitant to commit to a star piece this early in their rebuild though, as after his contact expires next summer, he’ll likely be asking for a high value contract with term. That’s a good risk to take, but perhaps they have other options in mind. They’re always reiterating the importance of the long-term plan and not losing sight of it so Robertson’s path to Philadelphia remains up in the air.

Next Season’s Path Still Unclear

Philadelphia’s lineup in October will probably have some differences from where it left off at game 82 last year. However, with no additions made yet, Briere’s plan may lie within the chaos of the draft and free agency. Perhaps some deals are based around draft picks and plays off of the desperation of other teams. There’s also the possibility of taking advantage of Dallas’ cap situation as well. He’s surely taking his time to make sure he’s seen as many options as possible. Therefore, Flyers fans may just need to exercise a little more patience before the first domino finally falls to kick off the Flyers 2025 summer of additions.
