Welcome back to our latest edition of NHL Rumours here at Last Word On Hockey. Today our journey takes us to the Pacific Northwest. We are discussing whether or not one of their players could be available, and who might be interested. So, let’s see if we can make sense of the situation between the Seattle Kraken and a goal scorer potentially on the trading block.
NHL Rumours: The Seattle Kraken Could Move Veteran Goal Getter
Rumour: Today’s rumour comes from David Pagnotta, of the Fourth Period. He is suggesting that Jared McCann is available to the big guns, looking to load up.
Analysis: Given Jared McCann’s recent point production, and the fact that he is available, what team wouldn’t kick a tire on general manager Jason Botterill’s lot.
It seems that the Seattle Kraken are interested in moving their veteran point producer. The Kraken have been doing some retooling this offseason, and generally moving on from veterans is the type of move that fits. For instance, bringing in Mason Marchment has the potential to be impactful. However, it is by no means a major roster shakeup. Although it is likely the reason the Kraken are even able to discuss moving McCann. That is, based on their reliance on him as a producer. They were lucky to get Marchment without giving up any roster pieces. For Seattle, they do need all the support they can get.
Understanding What McCann Brings
In terms of Jared McCann being a veteran, he’s by no means unable to get the job done. In fact, he doesn’t turn 30 until next May. He’s still able to produce and a move to a contender surrounded by established stars would be a great boost to him. Not to mention the team looking to acquire him.
Any of the contenders out there looking to add a top-six producer, would gladly take McCann. McCann took a little longer developing, but especially since his time in the home of Starbuck’s, he has been quite consistent.
Before coming to Seattle, McCann had never eclipsed 19 goals as an NHLer. Then, in his 25-year-old campaign, he came to Seattle. Since that time, in four seasons, he’s never been below 22 tucks. His career high of 40 came in 2022-23. So, he is still at the tail-end of the prime of his career. You’d have to think he could still light it up for another couple seasons. Especially, after a potential rise in confidence of being able to play with offensive players.
Understanding Just Who Would Be Interested as Per NHL Rumours
The teams that Pagnotta has suggested include some clubs looking to solidify their standing as playoff teams. The New Jersey Devils and the Toronto Maple Leafs were at least a couple that specifically came to mind. Teams are always looking to have more options offensively, especially good teams. Moreover, providing secondary scoring, without breaking the bank, is something a lot of contenders desire.
McCann is currently under contract for the next two campaigns. He is set to earn $5M per season.
