NHL and Rogers Agree to New Canadian TV Deal
The deal extends a relationship with Rogers that was first reached in 2013. This deal is another 12-year deal like the one signed in 2013. However, the rights fees bump up from $5.2 million in the last agreement. The new Canadian TV deal will start in the 2026-27 campaign.
Sportico’s report added that the league’s media and executive committees have recommended that the Board of Governors approve the deal. A vote is expected to happen the coming days. The final announcement of the deal could happen as early as this week.
Canada’s TV deal is different where Rogers carries national games on its family of networks that include Sportsnet, CityTV and other channels. CBC carries Hockey Night in Canada, but under the Rogers banner.
What it Means
This deal gives some revenue certainty in a hazy picture. The league has been drawing well and getting good ratings. However, the impending tariffs with the United States could weaken the Canadian dollar.
Longtime commissioner Gary Bettman had expressed concern about this during the recent general managers meetings. However, Bettman said he hopes that “it’s just a moment in time.”
Rogers was expected to face stiff competition from Amazon for the package according to reports from the Canadian Press. However, the NHL is staying with its current partner.
The United Stats TV deal is split currently between ESPN and Turner Sports. That deal is currently worth around $600 million a year according to Sportico. Those deals run through the 2027-28 campaign.
