Jacob Markstrom Injured; Out 4-6 Weeks
Markstrom left Thursday night’s game against the Boston Bruins in the first period. The injury appeared to occur when Bruins forward Justin Brazeau crashed into the net. It seemed that Markstrom awkwardly went into his own goal post. The veteran goalie was in plenty of pain and has trouble getting up. However, he was able to leave the ice.
He has played for the Florida Panthers, Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames and the Devils across his 15-year NHL career. The soon-to-be 35-year-old has been a great pickup for the Devils since coming over from the Flames in the most-recent off-season. He has a 21-9-5 mark with a 2.20 goals-against-average and .912 save percentage. The Gavle, Sweden native also has three shutouts this season.
Markstrom has a career-mark of 236-205-62 with 23 career shutouts. The veteran goalie also has a career GAA of 2.69 and save percentage of .909.
What It Means
The injury means will see plenty of Jake Allen in the pipes as the Devils try to keep pace in the Eastern Conference. New Jersey finally got on track with its win over Boston on Thursday. However, it will sting not having its number one for a bit.
It also seems that Markstrom could miss the Four Nations tournament. He was one of the three goalies set to represent his native Sweden, but he may get held out of the lineup will he recovers from his injury.
This injury not only hampers New Jersey, but could be a problem for Sweden in the upcoming tournament.
