EDMONTON, Alberta — The Ducks got a hat trick for the second consecutive game, but it wasn’t enough to keep their win streak alive.
Mikael Granlund scored three goals for the Ducks, but Mattias Ekholm matched that with his first NHL hat trick as the Edmonton Oilers rode a dominant second period to a 7-4 victory on Monday night at Rogers Place, snapping the Ducks’ seven-game winning streak.
It was the second straight game that saw a defenseman deliver a hat trick for the Oilers (27-19-8) after Evan Bouchard had three goals and three assists in a 6-5 overtime win against the Washington Capitals on Saturday.
Zach Hyman and Connor McDavid each added a goal and an assist for the Oilers on Monday. Spencer Stastney scored his first goal in an Edmonton jersey and Darnell Nurse also scored.
Leon Draisaitl contributed four assists and Tristan Jarry stopped 36 of the 40 shots he faced.
The Ducks (28-22-3) cut a 5-2 deficit to 5-4 when Granlund scored with a wrist shot from the right circle at 13:38 of the third period.
McDavid scored into an empty net for a 6-4 lead with 1:48 left, and Ekholm followed with an empty netter with 1:11 to go to make it 7-4. Ekholm, 35, who was playing in his 938th career game, entered the night with three goals in 53 games this season.
All of Granlund’s goals came on the power play, starting with his 10th of the season just 3:24 into the game. It was his third NHL hat trick and his first since Dec. 29, 2017, when he was with the Minnesota Wild.
His linemate Alex Killorn added an even-strength tally 55 seconds into the second period, Beckett Sennecke notched two assists, and Ville Husso made 25 saves in the loss. Sennecke was coming off his first career NHL hat trick in a 4-3 overtime win against the Flames on Sunday night in Calgary.
“That line, [Sennecke] last night gets three (goals), [Granlund] gets three tonight. That line’s been very dangerous. It does a lot of good things for us,” Ducks coach Joel Quenneville told NHL.com. “It’s one of those games that you’ll say at the end of the year we would have loved to have those two (points), but at the same time, we’ve been fortunate to win a lot of games like it happened tonight.”
Ryan Strome was called for a double-minor high-sticking penalty on Nurse and Hyman scored on a backdoor feed from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 16 seconds into the second penalty to tie it 1-1 at 17:14 of the first.
After Killorn’s goal, Husso made a save on a McDavid penalty shot at 3:18 of the second, but the Oilers came back with four goals in a 3:49 span.
Stastney’s shot from above the left circle went off the skate of Ducks defenseman Olen Zellweger and into his own net to tie it 2-2 at 4:36.
Ekholm tipped in Hyman’s shot to give Edmonton a 3-2 lead at 6:28.
Nurse scored off a 2-on-1 to make it 4-2 at 7:34, and Ekholm scored on another 2-on-1 rush following a turnover to make it 5-2 at 8:25.
Granlund scored shortside again, this time from the right circle while on a power play, cutting the lead to 5-3 at 13:41 of the second.
“I think we were doing a lot of good things out there, playing the right way,” Granlund told NHL.com. “Everyone was doing what we can in our systems, and I think we’ve been doing a really good job for seven or eight games.
“Obviously, we didn’t rewarded tonight, but it’s not an easy game playing back-to-back and coming into this building.”

Cutter Gauthier helped out on Granlund’s first goal of the night and extended his points streak to five games with three goals and four assists across the stretch. … The Ducks went 3 for 4 on the power play. Edmonton was 1 for 3. … The Oilers got some fresh faces into the lineup with winger Kasperi Kapanen returning after missing three games with an injury and center Josh Samanski made his NHL debut.
