The Ducks have re-signed goalie Ville Husso to a two-year contract extension, the team announced in a news release on Sunday.
Husso, 30, was acquired from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for future considerations in February, spelling both the injured Tomas Suchanek at the American Hockey League level and the sidelined John Gibson for the parent club.
The Red Wings and Ducks had discussed a potential trade for Gibson then, but it was complicated by his injury status. The two sides consummated a deal that sent Gibson to Detroit on Saturday in exchange for another experienced goalie, Peter Mrázek, and two draft picks.
Terms of Husso’s deal were not disclosed, but PuckPedia listed Husso’s new annual average value as $2.2 million. Combined with Mrázek’s $4.25 million cap hit, the Ducks have $6.45 million in cap space committed to their goalies before they sign starter and restricted free agent Lukáš Dostál to what figures to be a lucrative extension.
Husso established himself as an NHL commodity with the St. Louis Blues before signing with Detroit. The better part of three seasons in Motown saw him cede ground in a sinewy goalie competition and ultimately be waived then assigned to the minors early last season. For the Ducks, he made four appearances after being traded, posting a 1-1-1 record and .925 save percentage in the process. He faced at least 39 shots in all three of his starts on a team that posted poor possession numbers for much of 2024-25.
General Manager Pat Verbeek hinted at the signing on Saturday. He discussed the importance of a third veteran goalie to stabilize efforts at both the NHL and American Hockey League levels. When asked if Husso was a candidate for that role, he said that was a “good guess.”
