The Carolina Hurricanes are adding some depth as they prepare for training camp. The team has signed veteran forward Kevin Labanc to a professional tryout contract.

Labanc spent last season with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Playing in just 34 games due to shoulder surgery, Labanc scored two goals. Prior to last season, Labanc had spent his entire career with the San Jose Sharks. His best season came in 2018-19, when he scored 17 goals in 82 games.
Role in Carolina
Labanc will have to earn his spot on the roster. The Hurricanes’ projected lineup does not show a need for a depth forward on the bottom lines. However, the Hurricanes may feel that having more depth may be better for them this season. If Labanc can make the roster, he can be someone who can fit into the bottom six and offer an offensive boost.
Another PTO
This is the second straight season Labanc has had to settle for a camp tryout. He landed one with the New Jersey Devils. While he ultimately did not make the Devils’, his performance in training camp got the Blue Jackets’ attention.
Given what last season tells us, even if things do not work out in Carolina, another team may be interested in bringing in Labanc. Even at 29-years old, Labanc is not the player he once was. However, if he can perform in training camp, it is likely he will have an interested team for this season.
