Marco Sturm Hired as Boston Bruins Head Coach
Sturm will be a head coach in the NHL for the first time, but he does have extensive experience being a bench boss at other levels. The German-born forward was the head coach of the Los Angeles Kings AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign, for the last three seasons. This is a high-profile job, but Sturm seems to be prepared for it. Sturm served as an assistant coach for the Kings from 2018-22.
He helped his native Germany on the international level as president and general manager. However, he’s also head coaching success at the international level. The 46-year-old guided his native country to a silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics. NHL players weren’t at the event, but taking Germany to the championship game is still a massive accomplishment.
Sturm has a plethora of experience as a player with stints on the Florida Panthers, Vancouver Canucks, Kings, Bruins and San Jose Sharks from 1997-2012. He notched 242 goals and 245 assists for 487 points in 938 career games.
What it Means
Sturm gets a chance with one of the big-name teams in the league. However, there’s some work that needs to be done. The Bruins are coming off dealing some of their key players like Brad Marchand, Brandon Carlo and others.
Boston General Manager Don Sweeney was recently given a contract extension earlier in the off-season. He and Sturm will have to work together in order to get the Bruins to return to the post-season after having their recent string snapped.
This is an interesting hire and Sturm will have his work cut out for him. Sturm will replace interim head coach Joe Sacco, who was not hired on a full-time basis.
