Anthony Mantha only played in 13 games last season before an ACL injury ended his season in November. Seeking to bounce back, the 30-year old has signed a new deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Mantha’s deal with the Penguins is a one-year contract worth $2.5 million. Furthermore, there is another $2 million for Mantha to earn if he can remain healthy.
With the Calgary Flames last season, Mantha scored four goals in 13 games before injuring his ACL in early November. The forward underwent ACL surgery a few days later and missed the remainder of the season.
Mantha Looking to Return to Form
Mantha has been a goal-scorer in his career. Since his first full season in 2016-17, the 2013 first-round pick did not have a season in which he scored less than 15 goals until the shortened 2021 season. After a few down seasons, Mantha scored 23 goals in the 2023-24 season.
With four goals in his first 13 games before getting injured last season, Mantha seemed to be on pace to put up his usual scoring numbers. Coming off the ACL injury, can Mantha return to form? ACL injuries can be career changing, as Robby Fabbri knows well .
If Mantha can overcome the injury and perform, it will be great for him and for the Pens. If not, it is possible we are seeing the beginning of the end of his career.
Mantha’s Role
The Penguins will likely ease Mantha back into the routine in training camp and the preseason. It will be interesting to see how he looks early in camp. Furthermore, it will be interesting to see how he does in a NHL game, even if it a preseason game? How does he handle getting checked for the first time? Is there rust or anything that may hinder is game?
Assuming all is well mechanically, Mantha fits into the middle six for the Penguins, but can be moved elsewhere depending on the team’s needs.
