Aatu Räty was called up by the Vancouver Canucks under emergency conditions on Sunday. Officially, the emergency is the loss of forwards Elias Pettersson and Nils Höglander. Unofficially, it’s losses to the New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues.
Aatu Räty Called Up by Canucks as Hope Falls
It’s one thing to look at the boxcars of a game and think the goaltender lost it. Kevin Lankinen allowing five goals on 12 shots is miserable! What else could he expect of the team in front of him after they limited the opposition to such paltry offence?
First off, it was four goals on eleven shots with an empty-netter. Second, you should have seen who was missing. And third… Yeah, no, he didn’t play a great game. But Igor Shesterkin did, and sometimes that’s just how games go.
No offence, but a team giving up two goals to Jonny Brodzinski in one period has had defensive breakdowns. And the Canucks did, missing two members of their first line for the entire third period. Six of the night’s eight goals happened after Pettersson and Höglander were ruled out of the game.
Both players could have helped on offence, of course. Pettersson had a six-game, nine-point streak broken, and Höglander had six points in the previous five games. But beyond that, losing those players meant lines were mixed up and defensive responsibilities got missed. The forwards missed their checks on both of Brodzinski’s goals.
The good news is that it was a game Vancouver would win almost every time they played like that. The bad news is that “almost” is still in the sentence, and they are running out of time for the odds to balance out.
Of Absent Friends and Saviours
Thatcher Demko was a full participant at practice on Sunday, according to Patrick Johnston. As of this writing, there has been no update on the condition of either of the newly injured players or Filip Chytil who suffered a concussion against the Chicago Blackhawks over a week ago.
The possibility of Demko returning is great news for the Canucks. Since they can’t rely on outscoring the opposition, much of their hope is in stealing the occasional game. Fans may hate it, but there is a reason why Rick Tocchet is playing shutdown hockey.
Aatu Räty has had a great year with the Abbotsford Canucks, but that hasn’t translated to the NHL yet. His 39 points in 41 games lead the AHL squad, and given who he’s replacing the Canucks have to hope he can find chemistry quickly. If Pettersson can’t come back for the Devils, Räty will get more than his NHL average ice time of 9:30.
Starting Pius Suter as the #1 centre is leaving the team short enough, never mind backing him up with Teddy Blueger. On the other hand, in those protected minutes Räty has been excellent on the draw. That’s always surprising in a young player, and could prove vital for this trip.
Aatu Räty Highlights Canucks Flawed Plan
Looking at the future, there is potential on Vancouver’s farm club. Certainly more now than there was half a decade ago. Räty, Max Sasson, Arshdeep Bains, and possibly Danilla Klimovich coming around all look like they can play roles soon. But the roles they will play probably won’t be top-six scorers.
Jonathan Lekkerimaki is filled with scoring line potential, but the rest? Klimovich has an NHL-quality shot, but there’s a lot more to the game than that now. Nils Åman and Linus Karlsson can fill AHL nets all they want, but they haven’t done the same in the NHL.
It’s hard not to look at an unsigned Brock Boeser with five goals in his last three games and think of how the team has treated him publicly. Yes, the criticism of his speed is valid, but so is noting that he doesn’t use his speed to score. Suter is the team’s other unsigned forward, and he may end the season as their only centre with 20 goals.
Right now is an excellent precursor to the challenge the Canucks face in the offseason. Even if the team does re-sign Boeser, they are desperately lacking at centre. If they manage to hold on to Suter, even though he’ll demand far more than his current $1.6 million, they still need scoring.
Bringing in one top-end player as a free agent or on an offer sheet will help, don’t get us wrong. But losing one forward for another doesn’t add depth. That lesson more than any other is being driven home to the team that’s on the road for another four games.
