Will Sean McVay catch Bill Walsh’s wins total this season?

Sean McVay is 12 regular season wins away from matching Bill Walsh

Last year, Sean McVay passed former Rams head coach John Robinson as the winningest coach in franchise history, now, McVay sits at 80 regular season wins, and if his Los Angeles Rams can win 12 games this year, then McVay will be tied with NFL legend Bill Walsh (and former Rams defensive coordinator and NFL head coach Lovie Smith) at 92 regular season victories apiece.

A slow start or a wounded Matthew Stafford likely won’t help the Rams chances, but do you think the team can win 12 or more regular season games this year? Or will McVay have to suit up again in 2026 to see this achievement through?

I understand that McVay’s main goal is to help his team win a Super Bowl, but there is also the reality that McVay’s grandad, John McVay, worked under Walsh while Walsh was dominating the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers, so this record may not be on the top of McVay’s mind, but it certainly would hold a special place for L.A.’s head coach.

When talking with Kay Adams for her (Up and Adams) show, McVay played down any potential winning record milestone at first, but then lit up some when Adams said that McVay could match Walsh this year with 12 more head coaching wins.

Check out the exchange between Adams and McVay below:

Adams: You became, and congratulations on this, the winningest head coach in Rams history.

McVay: Yah, that was cool.

Adams: Which is unbelievable before you turned 40, something only John Madden was able to do. I was looking at the all-time wins list today…I don’t wanna get this wrong…you’re climbing up there.

McVay: No, I’m not! (Don) Shula has 347 (combined regular season and playoff wins) …

Adams: There’s a world you pass Bill Walsh this year.

McVay: Really? Well…Bill…what he had 10 years for the Niners?

Adams: I don’t know, you would know that…you need 12 (wins) to pass Walsh, 12!

McVay: Well, let’s go! I’ll tell you what’s cool though…and I really do mean this, I think about all the people, and the players that been a part of that…I’m a small piece…”

Truly, whether McVay gets to 92 regular season wins this campaign or not, his current record(s) speak to the success he’s had since joining the Rams, and as long as McVay keeps winning, his name will continue to be thrown around with the best to ever do it.

Walsh also has 10 postseason wins, while McVay sits at 8, so in theory, McVay can match or take Walsh in both regular season wins and postseason wins as we head into the 2025 season.

As he goes into Year 9, that’s a nice spot for McVay to be in.
