Newly-minted Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula has the unenviable task of replacing future Hall of Fame defensive tackle Aaron Donald in his first year at the helm. So how does he plan to approach the situation?
Speaking to reporters this week, Shula said that the Rams intend to use a “committee approach” to their defensive line in order to replace Donald. Shula wants to have the defensive tackles “rush as a unit” in order to emphasize their respective strengths.
“It’s always going to be a committee approach,” Shula said, via ProFootballTalk. “I think that it’s always going to be as far as — it’s going to be a little different coming up with plans not having Aaron Donald out there, right? But it’s always going to be a committee approach in emphasizing those guys’ strengths and having those guys rush as a unit and rush together.”
Easier said than done.
For a decade Aaron Donald was doing the work of two or three defensive tackles as both a pass rusher and an eater of blocks. And while the Rams have no shortage of players with bright futures on their front seven, there isn’t anyone that seems ready to replace the future Hall of Famer.
Will the absence of Aaron Donald lead to a major decline on the Rams’ defense in 2024?
