Nick Caley is the latest Rams assistant coach to land a job as a coordinator elsewhere, following in the footsteps of Zac Taylor, Zac Robinson, Liam Coen and several others. He was hired as the Houston Texans’ offensive coordinator this offseason, joining DeMeco Ryans’ staff as the replacement for Bobby Slowik.
Though Caley has never been a coordinator before, Ryans is ecstatic to have him in Houston. After considering multiple other candidates, the Texans landed on Caley, who was most recently the Rams’ tight ends coach and pass game coordinator.
Ryans explained what made Caley a great candidate, pointing to his experience in multiple successful offensive schemes.
“I talked to a lot of great people throughout this process,” Ryans said Thursday, via NFL.com. “It was clear, as I kept going through it, talking to people and going through my process, it was very clear that Nick was the right guy for our team. His energy, his leadership ability, and with him being able to understand the run game, pass game, with him being in multiple schemes, multiple schemes that were successful, understanding how to tailor the offense to the players that we have, that led me to Nick.
The Texans have been to the playoffs in back-to-back years with C.J. Stroud at quarterback, but they were eliminated in the divisional round both times. They’re looking to become true Super Bowl contenders and after seeing the offense slump in 2024, Ryans believes Caley can get the Texans “over the hump.”
“I feel really strong in my conviction that he can lead us and get us over the hump,” he added. “We’ve had a lot of good success these first two years, and the reason we’re doing it is I think there’s another level that we can go to. I said earlier, it’s my job to take this organization to new heights, and I think hiring Nick will help us to get there.”
The Rams have already replaced Caley on Sean McVay’s coaching staff, hiring former Seahawks OL coach Scott Huff as their new TEs coach. They’ll still miss having Caley in L.A., but losing coaches has become second nature for McVay and the Rams.
