The Los Angeles Rams got off to a poor start this season but have since won two consecutive games to climb back into the playoff picture.
At 3-4, the Rams are just a half game out of first place in the NFC West and now could potentially become buyers ahead of the Nov. 5 trade deadline.
However, head coach Sean McVay cautioned that it is still too early to tell if that will be the case. If the team does go that route, they could look to acquire some help at inside linebacker.
“I think it’s probably a little bit too early in terms of being actual buyers. I know there have been a lot of conversations about the possibility of us selling. We haven’t really gotten into too many of those discussions. I think that’s always predicated on some of the dialogue that goes on behind the scenes between these teams. Obviously, things heat up as you get closer and closer to that deadline,” McVay said of the Rams’ plans.
“We’re a little bit thinner at that position, but I thought it was good to see Omar play the way that he did play. Jake Hummel played a handful of snaps as well, and then [Christian] Rozeboom had his role. We have some other guys that have some versatility to be able to play in those locations depending on the down and distance in specific situations.
“I would never say that anything would be ruled out in terms of the onboarding, but that’s not something that we’ve really dove into conversation-wise. But as you know, just even in years past those things can drastically or quickly change the closer that you get to that deadline being a real thing.”
As McVay noted, the Rams are currently thin at inside linebacker with only Jacob Hummel, Christian Rozeboom and Omar Speights listed on the depth chart.
The Rams placed Troy Reeder on injured reserve last week, which created a need at the position. He could potentially return this season, but the team would still benefit from adding another player from outside of the organization.
While there aren’t many inside linebackers rumored to be available, one potential option is Devin Lloyd of the Jacksonville Jaguars, who has recorded 50 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble in seven games this season.
Will Rams sell at trade deadline?
Any talk of the Rams selling off key players has been put on hold, with Cooper Kupp now likely to stick around after receiving interest from many teams around the league.
However, one player who could be dealt is veteran cornerback Tre’Davious White, who has been given permission by the Rams to seek a trade after being benched.
