Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay secured his 79th victory on Sunday by defeating the Las Vegas Raiders. The win tied him with John Robinson for the most by a head coach in Rams franchise history, the team announced on Sunday.
McVay was already on a quick path to becoming the greatest head coach in franchise history, and just tying Robinson might have secured that. Robinson spent nine seasons as the Rams’ signal caller from 1983-1991. Meanwhile, McVay is less than halfway into his eighth season after getting the job before the 2017 season.
Robinson made the postseason six times in his nine seasons, losing in the wild card round three times, the divisional round once and the conference championship two times. Robinson, like McVay inherited a somewhat unstable situation before righting the ship.
L.A. had four different quarterbacks in his first four seasons before finally landing on Jim Everett, who took them through the rest of Robinson’s tenure.
McVay had Jared Goff in Year 1, but was coming off of a 4-12 season that saw the Rams as one of the worst teams in all of football, and he too took L.A. to the playoffs in his first season.
McVay tied the record with a hard-fought win over the Raiders that shows the kind of determination McVay has had in recent years. Despite missing five key offensive pieces, McVay and Matthew Stafford still managed to will L.A. to its second win of the season.
He’ll have a chance to break the record, but it will be tough as the Rams face the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday Night Football in Week 8.
Sean McVay says Cooper Kupp will return vs. Vikings
The Rams came out of their bye with a 20-15 win over the Raiders to improve to 2-4 on the season.
The Rams were again without star wideout Cooper Kupp, who returned to practice earlier in the week and had a chance to play in Week 7. However, the team decided to hold him out as he is not quite back to his usual self yet.
“He was close but ultimately, you guys heard me talk about it throughout the course of the week, it was about returning to performance and not necessarily returning to play. Hopefully Thursday will represent that for us,” McVay said of Kupp.
McVay confirmed that Kupp will return for the Rams’ Week 8 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings but isn’t sure how many snaps he will see.
