When the Los Angeles Rams selected Stetson Bennett in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, many people assumed he’d be Matthew Stafford’s primary backup. Unfortunately, the two-time national champion missed the entire year.
In September, the Rams placed Bennett on the non-football illness list. There was a ton of speculation, but the team never revealed why the Georgia product was out for the season.
Speaking to reporters this Tuesday, Rams head coach Sean McVay provided an update on Bennett. The second-year quarterback has been participating in the team’s offseason program.
Rams fans will be happy to know that McVay had nothing but good things to say about Bennett.
“I mean, he looks good. He’s had a good look in his eyes,” McVay said, Pro Football Talk. “He’s been attentive in the meetings and then I’m looking forward to next week to being able to get out on the grass with all of our players and Stetson being one of them.”
Even though Bennett “looks good” this offseason, the Rams won’t rule out adding another young quarterback through the draft.
“I think you leave all options on the table,” McVay continued. “Stetson’s been here. We’re in phase one. It’s been just meetings and then lifting so our ability to get out on the field with the players hasn’t existed yet. That’s the thing that’s the most fun. But he’s done a great job of being engaged in the meetings.
The Rams may want to start thinking about a succession plan for Stafford. The veteran gunslinger turned 36 years old in February.
Los Angeles will be make its first draft selection this Thursday with the 19th overall pick.
