The Los Angeles Rams suffered a heartbreaking 33-26 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 3 due to some costly mistakes on special teams.
In what was a rematch of last season’s NFC Divisional Round, the Rams seemed to be on their way to avenging themselves as they took a 26-7 lead in the third quarter.
It was all downhill from that point on, however, as the team began to struggle in the red zone and could not put the game away.
The Rams also had two field goals blocked in the fourth quarter, including what would have been the game-winner as time expired after Matthew Stafford led his team down the field and into range.
“Uh, you know, Kevin Dotson was – the reality is, is that we’ve got to execute better,” Rams head coach Sean McVay said after the loss. “Credit to them. They made the plays. I’m not going to make any excuses.”
McVay was referring to starting right guard Kevin Dotson dealing with cramps in the fourth quarter, which led to him missing some key snaps.
Jalen Carter blocked Joshua Karty’s first attempt in the fourth quarter, which would have given the Rams an eight-point lead.
Jordan Davis then blocked the game-winning attempt and returned it for a 61-yard touchdown to help the Eagles improve to 3-0.
Karty finished 4-for-6 on the day in field goal attempts and has made six of his first eight attempts this season.
Matthew Stafford wants Rams to learn from loss to Eagles
After another crushing loss to Philadelphia, the Rams will look to bounce back when they host the undefeated Indianapolis Colts in Week 4.
Matthew Stafford, who did everything he could to help the Rams remain undefeated, discussed the mentality he wants his team to take moving forward.
“Learn from it. There’s so many other plays in this game that we can learn from and be better,” Stafford told reporters postgame.
“First and foremost, myself. Disappointed with how I threw it in some instances today. Just go back to it, continue to work hard and know that what you’re doing and the process that we’re doing is the right thing and find ways to win games.”
Stafford added that he is not concerned about how the Rams will respond when they face the Colts.
“I’ve got no questions or no concerns about how we’ll respond,” he said. “Bunch of guys that care about each other, care about doing stuff the right way, understand that our process – you know, trust that process that we have week in and week out going to work.
“Come with the same mindset, whether we won this game or lost this game. Got another one next week, big-time opponent and got to be ready to go.”
