Head coach Sean McVay is often times his worst critic and he had a lot to evaluate after seeing his Los Angeles Rams flame out at home against the Miami Dolphins.
The Rams lost to the Dolphins 23-15, and while the result was obviously disappointing it was how they looked offensively that should upset McVay.
Los Angeles looked flat for most of the evening and struggled to pick up first downs. Turnovers were also an issue as Matthew Stafford was picked off while Kyren Williams lost a fumble.
McVay didn’t mince words about his offense’s performance afterwards. “As it relates to the game, pretty straight forward,” McVay said. “We didn’t do nearly good enough job offensively.
“Defensively, I thought they did an amazing job being able to keep our football team in the game, but the turnovers gave us a chance and then we turned the ball right back over from an offensive perspective. And then there was really a lot of examples of the importance of continuity. I’ll have to go back and look at this tape but it’s got to be a lot better and we’ve got to evaluate everything and we’ve got to be a lot better.”
McVay also acknowledged that the execution on certain drives was sloppy and reinforced the need to be better as a group.
“I think there’s been a lot of instances where we haven’t been consistent enough, especially when you just look at it from…sloppy? Yeah, I mean, there was some execution that has to be better, and I want to be able to go back and look at the tape but these are things that we have to be able to clean up if we want to be the type of team. Especially from an offensive perspective, we’ve got to be able to play better and consistently execute better with 11 as one.”
Lastly, McVay summed up how the Rams’ offense has looked through 10 weeks.
“Inconsistent.”
It’s been a slog watching the offense operate at time this season, and with the regular season already more than halfway over time is running out to right the ship.
Sean McVay admits to being frustrated against Dolphins
There were a few opportunities for Los Angeles to comeback and win the game, but it constantly felt like they were holding themselves back. Sean McVay admitted to feeling frustrated trying to climb back into the game. “Frustration. I think just like everybody else because there are opportunities for us to be able to execute. I do have belief in these guys.
“Here’s the thing, and you know this we’re all in this thing together. We’ve got to be able to look at it and we’ve got to consistently figure out what’s the best way to put our guys in the right kinds of spots. And trying to be able to figure out some sort of semblance of an identity. Whatever I say is going to be an excuse. Frustration is the answer to your original question, and we have to be better.”
Knowing McVay, though, he’ll find a way to get the Rams back to performing up to his and the coaching staff’s standard.
