Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay revealed Tuesday that Matthew Stafford reported to training camp after agreeing to an adjusted contract.
McVay didn’t confirm details of Stafford’s re-worked deal beyond clarifying that the Rams didn’t extend their star quarterback, who is under contract through 2026.
“[I’m] grateful that we came to the solution that I think we all wanted, and now we can focus on this team and him being able to lead the way,” McVay told reporters on Tuesday. “And a lot of exciting things to potentially be in store.”
McVay said Stafford requested an adjusted deal earlier this offseason, but there was an “uptick in the urgency” over the last week, particularly on Tuesday.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, there was a belief that Stafford would consider holding out until he received an adjusted deal. He was originally due $31 million this season, making him 15th among the NFL’s highest-paid quarterbacks.
McVay wouldn’t address any rumors of a holdout now that the 36-year-old is in the building. He cited “a lot of layers” to talks without disclosing what’s changed in Stafford’s updated deal.
“Here’s the thing I’m excited about: He is here. We were able to solve that, and so I’m gonna focus on the things that we can control,” McVay said. “Fortunately, we don’t have to really worry about those things.”
Schefter said on NFL Live that the Rams will “move up” some of Stafford’s guaranteed money. He had $15 million guaranteed in 2025.
Stafford rebounded from an injury-plagued 2022 to lead Los Angeles back into the playoffs with 3,965 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and a 92.5 quarterback rating last season. He had signed a new four-year, $160 million contract in 2022 after guiding the Rams to a Super Bowl title.
