Former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley might not have to leave Los Angeles to land another coaching gig.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Rams are set to interview Staley for their opening at defensive coordinator this Wednesday. They’re trying to replace Raheem Morris, who left Los Angeles to become the head coach of the Falcons.
Despite how poorly things ended for Staley and the Chargers this season, he’s receiving considerable interest on the open market. He already met with the Dolphins and Packers for their defensive coordinator vacancies.
If the Rams want to hire Staley, they’ll have the inside track since he was their defensive coordinator during the 2020 season.
In Staley’s only season as the defensive coordinator for the Rams, his unit ranked first in points and total yards allowed. Oddly enough, the Chargers struggled mightily on defense with him at the helm.
Rams head coach Sean McVay has already stated that it’ll be tough to replace Morris. It wouldn’t hurt to go back to a familiar face in Staley, though.
The Rams could make a decision at defensive coordinator later this week.
