Random Ramsdom: If rumors are true, Steelers really wanted Stafford

I suppose I’ll never know whether or not this is a fact, but the reports/rumors are that the Pittsburgh Steelers really wanted Matthew Stafford in their building over Aaron Rodgers. I’m not sure if that is surprising, but it’s interesting.

Steelers reportedly preferred Matthew Stafford trade over Aaron Rodgers signing (ramswire)

“The Pittsburgh Steelers have a new quarterback in Aaron Rodgers, but he wasn’t their preferred choice.

The team reportedly prioritized trading for Matthew Stafford or re-signing Justin Fields before Rodgers, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.”

I get the Rodgers fatigue, but I hope people understand he’s a starting quarterback in the NFL, so everything he does or doesn’t do is news. That’s how it works. With that being said, I am glad that the Los Angeles Rams were able to hang on to Stafford, but I am curious what this season would have looked like with Rodgers.

I am very curious to see how the Steelers season goes, especially given that Rodgers may have not even be their first choice.

It’s all quite interesting.

ESPN #NFL Insider @AdamSchefter revealed that Aaron Rodgers was the #Steelers ‘third choice’ at QB this offseason.

They preferred re-signing Justin Fields who signed with the #Jets & they explored a trade with the #Rams for Matthew Stafford.

Rams named potential landing spot for recently-released star CB (ramswire)

“While most eyes are on the Miami Dolphins and one-time ex-Rams star Jalen Ramsey, there is another name out there who could be on the Rams’ radar: Jaire Alexander. The Green Bay Packers recently released the two-time Pro Bowler after seven seasons when they couldn’t find a trade partner or agree to a new contract.

In the wake of this news, Pro Football Focus’ Trevor Sikkema named the Rams as a potential landing spot for Alexander for the same reasons as Ramsey: They need star power in the secondary.”

Matthew Stafford rewrites his NFL narrative as Los Angeles Rams seek redemption in 2023 odyssey (motociclismo)

“The 2022 season was an unexpected deviation from the Rams’ high standards. Injuries, inconsistent performances, and unforeseen obstacles painted a picture of a team struggling to find its footing. Stafford, known for his tenacity and leadership, faced his own set of hurdles. Yet, through adversity, the Rams found valuable lessons and a renewed drive to improve.

Stafford’s Steadfast Leadership

Matthew Stafford’s role as a leader cannot be overstated. His ability to rally the team, even in the face of setbacks, has been instrumental in maintaining morale and focus. Stafford’s experience and poise under pressure provide a steadying influence on the field, inspiring confidence among teammates and fans alike. His commitment to excellence fuels the Rams’ ambition to return to the pinnacle of success.”

Random Ramsdom Fandom: We need to trade Puka (By CDNGolfer on Jun 8, 2025)

“We need to trade Puka Nacua the moment Stafford tells McSnead he’s retiring.

I’m guessing that will be after the ‘26 season and just before we need to shell out the big bucks Puka will be worth. It’s also when we have to start thinking about how we’re going to be paying the other young guys their own huge contracts. I’m probably missing someone but at the very least we’ll want to extend Turner, Verse and Fiske not to mention Avila.

So why Puka?

Every ‘star’ receiver Stafford has passed to has seen their numbers increase dramatically when coming from another team and drop considerably when they have signed elsewhere afterwards.

Golden Tate had 898 yards with Seattle before going to Detroit where in his first year he jumped to 1331 and averaged over 1,000 in each of his full years in Motown. After 7 games he was traded to Philly. He had 517 yards to that point but after the trade…278 in his final eight games that year. His final two years were with the Giants where he averaged just over 500 yards per.

Marvin Jones had 800 yards his last year with Cinci before coming to Detroit where he averaged 1000 yards/season despite sharing targets with Tate. He signed for more money with Jax where he averaged 680 over his two years there.

Kenny Golloday had the biggest drop off of all. His two years after his rookie season he averaged over 1100 per with Stafford throwing to him, signed for big bucks with the Giants and had less than 600 total yards in his two years there.

I think at the end of the ‘26 season, Puka will be at his maximum value and whoever else is throwing to him won’t have the arm to make so many of the throws Stafford does. Nor will they, probably, have the balls/confidence to try for the windows Stafford lives in. I would have to imagine that some team close to contending for the Super Bowl would be willing to trade at the very least a second for four years of prime Nacua.”
