The Los Angeles Rams have placed cornerback Jerry Jacobs on waivers with an injury settlement, ending a very short stint with the team due to a currently undisclosed ailment. Jacobs’ tenure with the Rams last less than one month should he go claimed or released after clearing waivers.
The Rams signed Jacobs on July 27 after learning that cornerback Derion Kendrick would be out for the season with a torn ACL and Darious Williams would also be out for an indefinite period of time.
Sean McVay had hinted at bringing back Ahkello Witherspoon — which may still happen — but the team ultimately decided to go with Jacobs as the signing when all the injuries occurred. The injury settlement, though, adds an interesting wrinkle to the waiver.
This type of waiver means that if Jacobs goes unclaimed, the Rams could have the option of just keeping Jacobs on Injured Reserve or releasing him outright.
With Jacobs out of the picture, it makes it more like that the Rams will keep someone such as Tre Tomlinson, Charles Woods, Josh Wallace or Shaun Jolly. This is to go along with Williams and Tre’Davious White leading the way at the cornerback position.
The Rams were supposed to be improved in this area from last season, but there has already been some turmoil thanks to the injury bug. As the season nears, hopefully the Rams can find some consistency in their secondary and not have to rely on a revolving door all season long.
Ernest Jones hoping for great contract year to stay with Rams
The Rams have managed to put together a balanced roster on both sides of the field that is comprised of young players and veterans.
Toeing the line between the two groups is Ernest Jones, who has stepped up in recent years and is slated to be the leader of the defense following Aaron Donald’s retirement.
Jones had a strong 2023 season, setting the Rams’ single-season record for tackles with 145 though he enters the 2024 season without an extension on his rookie deal.
Although he may be playing on the final year of his contract, the recent birth of his son is helping him keep things in perspective.
