Rams Sean McVay Address Matthew Stafford’s Possible Retirement

January 28, 2026 by Last Word On Pro Football

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford hinted at retirement over the past few seasons, and there’s a chance that the NFC Championship Game may have been his last in the league. Facing off against an elite Seattle Seahawks defense, the presumptive MVP finished the night completing 22 of his 35 attempts for 374 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. While it wasn’t enough to take down Seattle, he played at a high level and came inches away from being able to launch a potential game-winning Hail Mary.

After the game, one reporter asked head coach Sean McVay if Stafford would return next year, and the head coach’s response wasn’t all that great. While McVay said he’d welcome Stafford back with open arms, he insulted the reporter for asking the question in the first place, which isn’t fair considering Stafford himself may not want to play.

“Yes, if he still wants to play,” McVay said. “What the hell kind of question is that?”

Sean McVay Addresses Potential Matthew Stafford Retirement

Matthew Stafford has been one of the league’s better quarterbacks throughout his career, but his 2025 season is likely his best campaign thus far. Starting and appearing in all 17 games, the former first-overall pick completed 65% of his passes for a league-best 4,707 yards, 46 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He guided his team to a 12-5 record in a loaded division, earned First-Team All-Pro honors, and is the betting favorite to win the MVP.

While Matthew Stafford is still a great player, it may be hard for him to ignore the call of retirement. After all, he’ll be 38 next year and has a history of battling through injuries, although he has stayed healthy the past two seasons. Ultimately, only time will tell if Stafford returns, but the Rams have to hope he’ll suit up for at least one more season.
