The Los Angeles Rams lost a key assistant on Sean McVay’s coaching staff this offseason when Nick Caley was hired as the Houston Texans’ new offensive coordinator.
Caley was the Rams’ tight ends coach over the last two seasons and had the additional responsibility of being the pass game coordinator in 2024.
The Rams have since replaced Caley by hiring former Seattle Seahawks assistant Scott Huff as their new tight ends coach.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Rams will stay in house to address the vacancy at pass game coordinator by promoting Nate Scheelhaase:

Scheelhaase was the Rams’ passing game specialist and an offensive assistant last season. The 34-year-old has been a fast riser in the NFL coaching ranks as he interviewed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jacksonville Jaguars for their respective offensive coordinator jobs this offseason.
Prior to joining the Rams, Scheelhaase was part of the Iowa State coaching staff for six years and served as the offensive coordinator in 2023. He began his coaching career at his alma mater Illinois in 2015 and spent three seasons there.
Scheelhaase set multiple school records as the starting quarterback for Illinois during his playing career.
With his promotion to Rams passing game coordinator, Scheelhaase will get to continue learning from one of the brightest head coaches in McVay while having more responsibilities.
Rams’ offseason coaching moves
The Rams have made two additions to their coaching staff this offseason, including Huff and former New England Patriots outside linebackers coach Drew Wilkins, who was hired as the new defensive pass rush coordinator.
Wilkins replaced assistant defensive line coach AC Carter, who departed the organization to become the new outside linebackers coach for the Carolina Panthers.
The Rams also lost senior offensive assistant Jerry Schuplinski, who followed Caley to the Texans. L.A. additionally saw John Streicher take a job with the New England Patriots coaching staff.
