The Los Angeles Rams placed wide receiver Tutu Atwell on injured reserve, who has been battling a hamstring injury in recent weeks.
Atwell will be sidelined for at least the next four games and could potentially return in Week 13 against the Carolina Panthers.
Atwell missed Week 6 and barely played in the Rams’ blowout win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in London after re-aggravating the hamstring.
He signed a one-year, $10 million contract to return to the Rams this season and was expected to have a larger role in the offense.
That hasn’t been the case so far as Atwell has only caught four passes on nine targets for 164 yards and one touchdown in six games.
With Atwell unavailable for the next month, the Rams will likely give more opportunities to Jordan Whittington and seventh-rounder Konata Mumpfield.
L.A. could also look to acquire some depth at the wide receiver position before the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
The Rams have already made a move, adding cornerback Roger McCreary in a deal with the Tennessee Titans.
Davante Adams impressed with Rams rookie Konata Mumpfield
With Puka Nacua missing the Rams’ game against the Jaguars, Konata Mumpfield got more playing time and caught his only target of the day — a five-yard touchdown — to give the team an early lead in the first quarter.
Davante Adams, who had three touchdowns in the Rams’ win over the Jaguars, praised Mumpfield and compared the rookie to a younger version of himself.
“I call Konata my son, just because he just reminds me so much of myself, as far as a young Tae,” Adams said. “And honestly I think he’s ahead of where I was my rookie year, as far as just being comfortable in the league. He’s crazy coachable and he’s got all the ability in the world. So whenever I’m done in there, he’ll go and step up and he’ll be catching a lot more touchdowns than what he did today.”
After the game, Mumpfield praised Adams for all the knowledge that he has passed down to him.
“Really, just focusing on being the best version of myself,” Mumpfield said of his approach in such a deep wide receiver room. “It’s a blessing to be playing the game that we are today. So I mean, a lot of people wish they were in my shoes. So really, just taking a step at a time, a day at a time, stacking days, and learning as much as I can from those guys. Because, like I said, I mean, I prayed in college and in high school to learn from a guy like D Adams.”
