The star corner opposite of Jalen Ramsey is set to miss some time
The Los Angeles Rams have run into some trouble with their secondary depth, placing cornerback Darious Williams on injured reserve this week. He injured his ankle while colliding with teammate Taylor Rapp, late in the game against the Seattle Seahawks. William’s hasn’t had the greatest start the first five weeks of the season, but he is still way more experienced and trustworthy than the players behind him.
LA Rams Transactions:
• Activated, from Reserve T Tremayne Anchrum
• Reserve/Injured DB Darious Williams— Los Angeles Rams (@RamsNFL) October 12, 2021
Head coach Sean McVay spoke with the media in regards to the injury Monday stating:
“We are going to explore all measures. That could mean replacing Williams by committee.”
He also expressed that this move would be due to the fickle nature of ankle sprains but reiterated that this is not season-ending. By going on the short-term IR, means Williams will have to miss at the minimum three weeks. That includes the following games:
Week 5: Rams (4-1) at Giants (1-4)
Week 6: Lions (0-5) at Rams (4-1)
Week 7: Rams (4-1) at Texans (1-4)
After CB David Long got benched in favor of Robert Rochell, he will likely be forced back into action in his place. But the fact that McVay said they will look to play by committee, opens the door for a promotion to some players on the practice squad. The Rams currently have five defensive backs on the practice squad: Antoine Brooks Jr., Dont’e Deayon, Tyler Hall, Kareem Orr, and J.R Reed.
Dont’e Deayon mostly plays in the slot, so I’m not sure that would make much sense unless they set up David Long on the outside. Kareem Orr as well as J.R Reed had outstanding training camps and preseason, they could get be first on the board for promotion. Tyler Hall is one of the more versatile defensive backs we have on the practice squad, he can play inside, outside, and brings a physical element to the defense.
Regardless of what they do, it’s fortunate for the LA Rams that Williams injury was not more serious. They just have to get by these next few weeks.
In a corresponding move, the Rams activated tackle Tremayne Anchrum from short-term IR.
