Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay had accomplished an almost unfathomable amount in the world of football by the time he turned 37 in 2023. He had been hired as the head coach of the Rams at 31, and within six years had taken the team to four playoff appearances, two Super Bowl appearances and a championship in Super Bowl LVI.
But the Rams had a disastrous title-defense effort, marred by injuries, leading to retirement considerations from both superstar Aaron Donald and McVay. Donald’s was unsurprising. He had accomplished everything he wanted to in football and never expressed himself as someone who would play until the wheels fell off. But for McVay, at just 37, the rumors were a shock.
McVay ultimately decided to give it one more chance, and clearly re-discovered his love for the game in 2023 when the Rams made a surprise run to the playoffs. Now, looking back with some help from college coaching legend Chris Petersen, the idea of retiring at 37 is almost silly to him, via Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic:
“He has helped me see this game and this profession in (such) a totally different lens that the idea of not coaching feels so laughable,” said McVay. “I get so much more joy out of things that I just didn’t give a s— about before.”
The Rams are certainly happy to hear that McVay is out of the darkness that he felt after 2022 and has remembered what he loved about the game of football. McVay is one of the best coaches in the sport, and has proven it time and time again. For him to not be around would have been a shame for the entire sports world.
The Rams are now in an incredible place with a star-driven offense and a young and hungry defense. And with McVay at the helm still, the sky is the limit in Los Angeles.

One major change in the sport of football this offseason was the addition of flag football to the 2028 Olympics lineup in Los Angeles, and the agreement that NFL players will be given the opportunity to play. But with increased injury risk playing during the summer, all major NFL figures, like Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay, are being asked for their opinion.
McVay has always been an extremely pro-player coach. It’s what has allowed him to keep star players happy over the years, even taking team-friendly contracts to help L.A. win. There has never really been bad words said about him by players.
So it stands to reason that he would be in support of his players wanting to play flag football at the Los Angeles Olympics in the summer of 2028.
