Rams News: Matthew Stafford’s Back ‘Feels Good’ After Week 1

September 10, 2025 by Rams Nation

Matthew Stafford, Rams

The Los Angeles Rams started their 2025 season with a 14-9 win over the Houston Texans at SoFi Stadium, with Matthew Stafford under center as expected.

The veteran quarterback was able to get a full week of practice in ahead of the Week 1 matchup. That was significant as Stafford missed roughly two months because of an aggravated disk in his back that limited him for most of training camp and the preseason.

During a recent episode of SiriusXM’s “Let’s Go!” podcast, Stafford said his back feels fine after the Rams’ win over the Texans and is looking forward to getting back on the field in practice:

“I feel good. First time playing football in a while. As a quarterback, we go through training camp, we don’t get hit all of training camp, at least in our camp. And then you show up Week 1 and it’s a physical game against a really good front. So there’s some soreness but nothing to deal with my back. I feel great, excited that I came out of it the way I did. And looking forward to having a good week of practice.”

It’s encouraging that Stafford came out of the regular season opener with only general soreness and appears to have no doubts about playing in the Rams’ next game against the Tennessee Titans.

The Rams will go as far as Stafford can take them this season, and the 37-year-old is off to a great start after finishing as Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded quarterback in Week 1.

Matthew Stafford reacts to reaching 60,000 career passing yards

Matthew Stafford did just enough to help the Rams defeat the Texans in Week 1, completing 21 of 29 passes for 245 yards and one touchdown.

He made some big throws when the Rams needed it most, including one across the middle of the field to Puka Nacua in the second half.

That pass got Stafford to 60,000 passing yards for his career, becoming just the 10th quarterback to reach that milestone. After the game, he discussed what it means to him to join the club.

“It brings back a lot of memories, you know?” Stafford said. “I’ve been blessed to play this game for a long time with a bunch of great players. The cool thing about quarterback, and my thought about it is, I can’t throw for any of those yards without 10 other guys that are doing their job, and so it’s really cool. I share it with so many people, and so many teammates, and a bunch of coaches, and my family and everybody that’s helped me get there. You get in those longevity-type places where you’re breaking those kind of things, it’s not, ‘Oh, that was a cool year, or a cool two years.’ I mean, it’s been a long time, and a lot of people have sacrificed a lot to help me out along the way, and I appreciate each and every single one of ’em. But it’s cool. It’s an amazing thing. And sure as hell glad that we did it getting a win, too.”
