For a moment, it seemed like the Los Angeles Rams would part ways with Matthew Stafford as the two sides renegotiated the terms of his contract.
The Rams have shown they’re not afraid to make difficult decisions when it comes to the roster, and trading Stafford was certainly on the table if they couldn’t get a new deal done ahead of offseason training activities. Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed as Stafford and Los Angeles worked out a new restructured deal that will keep the quarterback with the team for at least the 2025 season.
Stafford may be getting up there in age, but he’s shown he can still will a team to victory in clutch moments. He and the Rams were the closest team to beating the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2025 NFL Playoffs, so the organization has every reason to feel confident in their Super Bowl odds.
The 2025 season schedule recently dropped and Los Angeles will host Stafford’s former team the Detroit Lions in Week 15. When asked what it’ll be like to see the Lions again, Stafford said he was looking forward to the matchup, via NFL Network:
“That’ll be fun. We’ve had some great matchups. Dan and Jared and those guys did a hell of a job the last couple years getting that thing turned in the right direction. They’re playing really good football. Lost some coordinators and that’s a challenge. Every season is a new season when you step out there and go play. Definitely had some great matchups the last couple years against those guys. It’ll be interesting having it in our place in December. I’m sure it’ll be another good battle.”
Stafford made a name for himself in Detriot, though his tenure there didn’t result in much winning due to poor roster construction and the strength of the NFC North. However, since the blockbuster trade that sent Stafford to the Rams and Jared Goff to the Lions, both teams have been at the top of their respective divisions and are in the inner circle of NFC contenders.
Los Angeles and Detroit have turned into friendly rivals on the field and it’ll be exciting to see if Stafford can pull off a win against his old squad.

Matthew Stafford seems willing to take his contract situation year-by-year with the Rams, though for the 2025 season he is reportedly set to make $17 million more than last season though his cap hit is lower after the team added five void years to the end of his deal.
