Kyren Williams was the Los Angeles Rams’ bell-cow running back during the 2024 season after his breakout sophomore campaign in 2023. Williams played 16 games, rushing for 1,299 yards and 14 touchdowns while adding another 182 yards and two touchdowns through the air. He established himself as one of the best backs in the league.
The Rams have not had a true bell-cow back, and one making significant money, since Todd Gurley. After giving Gurley a massive extension, they eventually lost him to a degenerative knee injury, and appeared skittish to repeat the pattern with another back.
Williams is eligible to sign an extension with the Rams this offseason and secure his future in L.A. both financially and on the field. His production — and the fact that he’s still only 24 — make him a fairly certain candidate to receive an extension. However, a deal has not been completed yet.
The running back is not concerned about the lack of a new contract, even though the two sides have already met to negotiate with no success, according to Gary Klein of the L.A. Times:
In April, the Rams and Williams’ agent exchanged proposed contract terms. But with organized team activities scheduled to begin next week, a deal has not been done.
Still, Williams said he was “feeling good” about the situation.
“I know with time it’s going to happen,” Williams said last week in Pasadena, where he helped distribute new shoes to kids affected by the Eaton Fire.
Williams elaborated on his motivations to get a deal done and what he’ll do in the meantime:
“I would love for it to get done so I can take care of my family and the loved ones that helped me get here,” he said. “I’ve always got trust in God. Whether it happens now or I play out the season, I know it’s going to happen eventually.
“And so, time will tell. I just know I’ve got to do what I need to do each and every single day to make sure that it does happen in my favor.”
Based on this, it doesn’t appear that Williams is threatening any sort of holdout without an extension. But given how productive he’s been and how important he’s proven to be for L.A.’s offense, it might behoove the Rams to get a deal done sooner, before he either gets more expensive or possibly changes his mind on a holdout.

Although the Rams waived Cooper Kupp in the offseason, they rebounded nicely by signing Davante Adams in free agency.
Adams seemed keen on returning to the West Coast following his release from the New York Jets, and landed in a perfect situation as Los Angeles desperately needed a true X-receiver to pair with Puka Nacua. Adams may be on the downswing of his career, but is still a highly effective outside receiver that can still get open on any given play.
Matthew Stafford has never had a pass-catching corps this well-rounded in his career and is expected to play at a high level with this new group. Stafford and Adams have only gotten some minimal work in so far, but the star quarterback expressed how happy he is to have the veteran wideout on the squad in an interview with NFL Network.
