The Los Angeles Rams have a big matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. But it certainly doesn’t look how many expected it to when the schedule was first released. The Rams are 3-2 after two frustrating losses to an undermanned San Francisco 49ers team and an out of sorts Philadelphia Eagles team. The Ravens, meanwhile, are 1-4 while Lamar Jackson battles a hamstring injury.
Jackson suffered the injury in the team’s Week 4 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, forcing him to miss Week 5 against the Houston Texans. Cooper Rush started in his place, and the Ravens were dominated from start to finish. Now, all signs are pointing to Jackson having to sit another week and Rush getting the start.
Rams fans would have loved to see their team against a full-strength Ravens roster as a measuring stick. But no one is more upset about it than Rams Defensive Rookie of the Year Jared Verse. The budding star spoke about his feelings should James ultimately be ruled out, via Adam Grosbard of the Southern California News Group:

Verse is not one to shy away from giving bulletin board material to opposing players and teams. His personality and edge are among the main things that Rams fans, and the organization, loves about him. And it’s part of what makes him one of the best young defensive players in the game right now.
And while he very clearly wanted the opportunity to take down Jackson and help his team win, he’ll likely have to settle for Rush as the Rams seek out a 4-2 start to the season.
Rams deciding on defensive starter replacement
The Rams could be without a key player on defense for their game against the Ravens on Sunday as Omar Speights is considered doubtful due to a high ankle sprain.
Speights sustained the injury in the Rams’ overtime loss to the 49ers in Week 5. It limited him to playing only 44% of the team’s defensive snaps in the game.
With Speights unlikely to go, the Rams have been trying to figure out who will start in his place at inside linebacker alongside Nate Landman against the Ravens. Head coach Sean McVay reiterated that Troy Reeder and Shaun Dolac are the leading candidates.
“We’ll work through that,” McVay said. “I have a lot of confidence in Troy. We have a lot of confidence in some of the different guys. Obviously, Dolac.
“We only have four guys on the roster, but Troy is a guy that’s shown that he’s more than capable, as is Shaun Dolac. We have guys on the practice squad but haven’t gotten too far deep into that quite yet.”
