The Jacksonville Jaguars announced they signed running back Cody Schrader off of the Los Angeles Rams practice squad.
Schrader’s signing comes on the heels of the Jaguars’ trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, sending out fellow running back Tank Bigsby in exchange for fifth and sixth-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Schrader was one of the most impressive players for the Rams during their preseason slate, showing off great burst and speed in the open field as well as the ability to contribute on special teams. Jacksonville was already familiar with Schrader’s skillset as Jaguars general manager James Gladstone served as Los Angeles director of scouting strategy during their time with the organizaiton.
The Rams initially waived Schrader in the offseason due to final roster cuts for the 2025 season, but signed him to their practice squad the next day. He was then elevated to the active roster for Week 1 against the Houston Texans.
Schrader originally went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft, but subsequently signed with the San Francisco 49ers. Shortly after, he was drafted by the St. Louis Battlehawks with the 13th pick in the 2024 UFL Draft though was waived later that summer. Luckily, he landed with the Rams after they claimed him off waivers.
Los Angeles has a workhorse running back in Kyren Williams, but head coach Sean McVay has always preferred to have solid depth at the position. Blake Corum is listed as the No. 2 running back on the depth chart behind Williams, while Jarquez Hunter could have more opportunities to contribute now that Schrader is with the Jaguars.
On the flipside, Jacksonville gets to take a flier on Schrader who can immediately challenge for backup snaps behind starter Travis Etienne. The Jaguars took Bhayshul Tuten in this year’s draft and while the speedster seems like a great fit for Jaguars head coach and former Rams offensive coordinator Liam Coen, Schrader might be able to carve out a role either on offense or on special teams.
Moves of this caliber typically don’t come back to haunt teams, though there was legitimate excitement about having a player like Schrader in the building. It goes to show how deep the current roster is and for Schrader it’s a new opportunity to stick in the league.

The Rams have done well identifying quality players in undrafted free agency, and Shaun Dolac seems like another gem. Dolac impressed during training camp and preseason, and he reflected on making the final 53-man roster.
