The Los Angeles Rams have been one of the better teams in the preseason, winning their first two games against the Dallas Cowboys and the L.A. Chargers.
The Rams will close out their preseason schedule this weekend when they take on the Cleveland Browns. They’ll then have a couple of weeks off before Week 1 of the 2025 season kicks off.
Head coach Sean McVay has popularized keeping starters and rotation players out of preseason games entirely in an effort to protect against injuries and it’s largely worked. Even though the starters on both sides of the ball miss game reps, the work they get done in joint practice sessions is normally sufficient enough.
For their final preseason game, McVay announced that Dresser Winn will get the start at quarterback against the Browns, via Wyatt Miller of TheRams.com:
He confirmed that quarterback Dresser Winn will start on Saturday against Cleveland. Winn hasn’t received any snaps in 2025, but played the entirety of last season’s preseason finale against the Texans, completing 9 of 16 passes for 72 yards.
McVay also confirmed Terrance Ferguson will get some snaps for the first time this preseason after missing time with a groin injury:
Meanwhile, second-round pick Terrance Ferguson will see his first NFL action on Saturday, McVay said, after the tight end was held out of the first two preseason games and some of training camp with a groin injury.
Stetson Bennett has the third quarterback job on lock, so Winn is simply serving as a body to fill in. It’s also a chance for him to show what he can do to try to earn a roster spot somewhere.
The most important update is Ferguson, who was the Rams’ first selection in the 2025 NFL Draft but hasn’t hit the field.
Drafting Ferguson in the second round seemed to indicate that McVay would use more 12 personnel with two tight ends, though so far he has been married to the 11 personnel grouping he’s become well-known for. Tyler Higbee is the listed starter at the top of the depth chart at the position, though Ferguson has an opportunity to earn playing time sooner than later.
Touted as a solid all-around tight end, Ferguson will be worth watching when he makes his NFL debut.
