John Robinson, who served as head coach of the Los Angeles Rams from 1983-1991, passed away on Monday at the age of 89.
The Rams honored Robinson with a moment of silence before their game against the Miami Dolphins.
“We are heartbroken to share that former Los Angeles Rams head coach John Robinson passed away earlier today,” the team said in a statement.
“Coach Robinson holds the record for most regular season wins in Rams franchise history. He also won four Rose Bowls and a national championship as the head coach of USC and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009. Our thoughts are with Coach Robinson’s family and friends, and all who he impacted throughout his storied career.”
Between the regular season and playoffs, Robinson won 79 games as head coach of the Rams. That stood as the most in franchise history until Sean McVay recently passed him with a victory over the Minnesota Vikings two weeks ago.
The Rams reached the playoffs in six of Robinson’s first seven seasons at the helm, including a pair of NFC Championship game appearances. A number of familiar coaches worked alongside Robinson during his time in Los Angeles, including Norv Turner, Hudson Houck and Gill Haskell, among others.
Running back Eric Dickerson led the NFL in rushing yards three times during Robinson’s tenure – including a still-NFL-record 2,105 during the 1984 season.
After Robinson left the Rams at the end of the 1991 season, he returned to USC as their head coach. Robinson originally began his head coaching career with USC in 1976 and led the Trojans to a national championship two years later.
He went 104-35-4 across two stints as head coach of USC and guided the team to eight Bowl Game appearances. Considered one of the most popular and successful head coaches in the program’s history, he was inducted into the USC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.
Robinson later went on to serve as head coach of UNLV. After a brief stint as athletic director for the school, he became the defensive coordinator for San Marcos High School in 2010.
Robinson’s final football job was serving as a senior consultant for LSU from 2019-2021.
Rams fall to Dolphins
The Rams had their three-game winning streak snapped with a 23-15 loss to the Dolphins on Monday Night Football, dropping to 4-5 this season.
The Rams will look to get back on track when they take on the New England Patriots in Week 11.
